White House urges speedy review of revised travel ban

The White House urged a federal appeals court on Wednesday to hasten its review of President Trump’s revised travel ban.

Politico first reported the expected federal appeal plan.

The Justice Department asked the Richmond-based 4th Circuit Court of Appeals to expedite overturning an injunction on the federal government.

U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang issued the injunction earlier this month, preventing the Trump administration from executing its ban on issuing visas to individuals coming from six predominantly-Muslim countries.

“This case presents constitutional and statutory issues of nationwide significance,” Justice Department attorneys wrote in their filed court motion, obtained by Politico.

“The district court here enjoined the President and government agencies from enforcing a key provision of the Order, which is designed to protect national security, an interest that this Court has recognized as paramount,” it continued.

The International Refugee Assistance Project and Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, two organizations dedicated to aiding refugees, appealed the suit.

A lawyer representing the aid groups declined to provide Politico with comment on the federal government’s new motion.

A Hawaii-based judge issued a broader injunction against Trump’s revised executive order earlier this month.

The Justice Department is expected to also file a formal appeal in the Hawaii case.
