Honda to recall more than 1 million vehicles over defective airbags

Honda on Tuesday announced it would be recalling 1.1 million vehicles in the United States to replace defective airbags.

The auto manufacturer said it learned of the problems with the Takata airbag inflators after a crash involving a 2004 Honda Odyssey. The front airbag deployed in the crash and injured the driver’s arm.

{mosads}Honda said the issue resulted from “excessive moisture into the inflator during assembly” due to a manufacturing error at their Monclova, Mexico facility.

Repairs to the defective airbags will be made immediately made available and are free.

The company said they have now recalled roughly 21 million Takata front airbag inflators in about 12.9 million Honda and Acura vehicles in the United States.

Automakers in the United States repaired more than 7.2 million of the defective airbag inflators in 2018, according to a 2018 report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
