Delta flight returns to Atlanta over smoking engine

A Delta Air Lines plane taking off from Atlanta returned to the airport on Wednesday evening due to a smoking engine.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport confirmed on Twitter that smoke emanated from “a departing aircraft” that went back to the airport.

{mosads}“ARFF units hosed down the aircraft’s smoking engine. The aircraft is being towed, w pax aboard, back to the concourse,” the airport wrote on Twitter, referring to Aircraft rescue and firefighting.

The airport also said there were no reported injuries in the incident, which comes after a woman died earlier this week when a piece of the engine broke apart and shattered a window on a Southwest Airlines flight, partially sucking the woman out of the aircraft.

The National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the Southwest incident, said the blown engine had “metal fatigue.”

The Southwest plane had taken off from LaGuardia Airport in New York Tuesday morning, flying to Dallas Love Field Airport when the aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing at Philadelphia International Airport.

The recent incidents have placed a renewed emphasis on aviation safety. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) on Wednesday pressed her colleagues on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to hold an aviation safety hearing following the fatal incident on the Southwest flight.
