Nearly 80 percent of Americans believe the United States will pay for President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed wall on the southern border, according to a new CBS News poll.
Seventy-nine percent of Americans think the United States will pay for the wall, though Trump has pledged he will get Mexico to pay for it. Just 14 percent of respondents said they think Mexico will foot the bill.
Fifty-nine percent said they are against erecting such a wall, while 37 percent support it.
{mosads}Opinions of a wall are split by party, with 65 percent of Republicans supporting its construction and 79 percent of Democrats objecting.
Overall, 39 percent said they expect Trump to keep most of his campaign promises, while more than half the public thinks he will not.
When asked whether Trump will serve the interests of the American people or the interests of his family and businesses, the response was mixed.
Eighty-one percent of Republicans said Trump will make decisions on behalf of the electorate, while just 19 percent of Democrats agreed.
The survey was conducted Jan. 13-17 on landline and cellphones, polling 1,257 adults across the country. It has a margin of error of 3 points.
