Feds delay road safety regs
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is delaying new highway safety regulations intended to reduce the number of deaths and injuries from car accidents on public roads, the agency announced Tuesday.
The FHWA proposed changes to the Highway Safety Improvement Program in March, but said Tuesday it is extending the comment period through June 30 to give industry more time to consider the rule.
The program would measure the dangers presented by roads across the country by requiring states to collect data about different roadways.
The highway administration hopes this will help states estimate the number of crashes on their highways and other roads, and designate federal funds to fix the situation.
The FHWA estimates the rule could cost industry as much as $228 million.
