Feds reviewing safety issues in 4.9M Chrysler vehicles

Federal regulators are looking into reports of problems that could lead to engine stalls in 4.9 million Chrysler vehicles, according to news reports.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Monday it is considering opening an investigation, following a petition from the Center for Auto Safety, which complains of numerous safety issues with these vehicles.

The investigation would cover a broad scope of Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles that were manufactured between 2007 and this year.

The complaints involve engine stalls, airbag non-deployment, and random horn, headlight, taillight, and door locks, among other problems, according to the Center for Auto Safety.

The Center for Auto Safety petitioned the NHTSA on Aug. 21 to investigate the problem after receiving about 70 complaints from drivers.

Chrysler said it is also looking into the complaints.

“In keeping with sound engineering practice and Chrysler Group’s longstanding policy of cooperation with NHTSA, the company is actively investigating customer complaints and retrieving components from the field for closer analysis,” according to a statement from the company. “Every Chrysler Group vehicle meets or exceeds all applicable safety standards.”
