Regulation

New regs for Tuesday: Nuclear, nurses, reusable medical devices

Tuesday’s edition of the Federal Register contains new rules for non-licensees seeking nuclear regulatory approvals, reusable medical devices and nurse training.

Here’s what is happening:

Nuclear approvals: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is looking at new requirements for non-licensees seeking regulatory approvals.

These companies would be required to submit complete and accurate information under a petition the NRC is considering. This would ensure they are held to the same standard as licenses, the agency said.

Medical devices: The Food and Drug Administration is issuing new guidance for reusable medical devices.

The reprocessing instructions would apply to validating and labeling these medical devices, the agency noted.

Nurse training: The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is moving forward with new eligibility requirements for low-income people from disadvantaged backgrounds looking to participate in nursing training.

The Health Resources and Services Administration, a division of HHS, announced Monday it is updating the income levels that determine which people are eligible for financial assistance to participate in these nursing training programs.

People from families that have an annual income that is not more than double the agency’s poverty guidelines would qualify. The poverty line for a single person is anyone making $23,540 per year or less; $31,860 for two people; and $40,180 for a family of three.

Efficiency: The Department of Energy has decided not to regulate five types of lamps.

The Energy Department’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy was looking into rough service lamps, vibration service lamps, three-way incandescent lamps, incandescent lamps with a lumen of 2,601-3,300 and shatter-resistant lamps.

But they agency said Monday it will continue to exempt these lamps from energy conservation standards.
