New regs for Monday: Nuclear, sunscreen, stolen cars

Monday’s edition of the Federal Register contains new design rules for nuclear power plants, guidelines for sunscreen products and information about vehicle thefts.

Here’s what is happening:

Nuclear: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is moving forward with new recommended general design criteria for nuclear power plants.

{mosads}The regulatory guide for nuclear power plants released Friday addresses the general design criteria for ultimate heat sinks.

The guidelines go into effect immediately.

Sunscreen: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering new recommendations for sunscreen products.

The FDA’s draft guidance released Friday addresses the safety and effectiveness of certain ingredients in over-the-counter sunscreens. This stems from the Sunscreen Innovation Act.

The public has 60 days to comment.

Stolen cars: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that vehicle thefts are on the rise.

The NHTSA announced Friday that 1.15 cars out of every 1,000 passenger vehicles were stolen in 2013, the most recent year data is available. That’s a slight 2 percent increase from the previous year.

However, thefts are down by 70 percent over the last two decades, and 37 percent since 2003.

The data is available immediately.
