New regs for Thursday: Salt, toxic chemicals, workplace

Thursday’s edition of the Federal Register contains new sodium limits, toxic chemical reporting requirements, and workplaces fines.

{mosads}Here’s what is happening.

Salt: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is calling for new limits on salt.

The FDA released voluntary draft guidance Wednesday that recommends sodium reduction goals for the food industry. The recommendations target processed, packaged, and prepared foods at restaurants and from food manufacturers.

“These goals are intended to address the excessive intake of sodium in the current population and promote improvements in public health,” the FDA wrote.

The public has 90 days to comment.

Toxic chemicals: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing new reporting requirements for a group of toxic chemicals.

The reporting requirements would apply to chemicals known as hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), which the EPA believes “can reasonably be anticipated to cause developmental and reproductive effects in humans and is highly toxic to aquatic and terrestrial organisms.”

The public has 60 days to comment.

Workplace: The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is moving forward with new fines for unruly employers.

Some companies are required to post notices in the workplace that remind employees of their rights under the Civil Rights Act and Americans with Disabilities Act, but the EEOC is raising the fines for employers that do not post the notices.

The changes go into effect in 30 days.
