New regs for Tuesday: Boats, oxygen, insurance

Tuesday’s edition of the Federal Register contains new safety regulations for tow boats, labeling requirements for oxygen devices and financial requirements for insurance companies.

Here’s what is happening:

Tow boats: The Coast Guard is moving forward with new safety regulations for tow boats.

Tow boats will be subject to new inspection standards as well as electrical and machinery requirements from the Coast Guard.

The new rule goes into effect in 30 days.

Airplanes: The Federal Aviation Administration is moving forward with new labeling requirements for portable oxygen concentrators.

The labeling requirements would apply to portable oxygen concentrators that people who have difficulty breathing take on airplanes.

The labeling requirements will replace the current case-by-case approval of portable oxygen concentrators.

The changes go into effect on June 23.

Insurance: The Federal Reserve is considering new capital requirements for insurance companies.

The Fed issued Monday an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking for depository institution holding companies that are “significantly engaged in insurance activities.”

The public has until Aug. 17 to comment.
