Speaker Ryan to call for new government spending limits

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) will call for the federal government to rein in spending Thursday.

As the national debt surges past $19 trillion, Republicans are searching for ways to limit Washington’s footprint. Congress should have the final say over “who is spending their money, what it’s being spent on, where it’s being spent, when it’s being spent, and why it’s being spent,” they say.

But, “over time, congressional control over federal spending has eroded,” Republicans charge.

{mosads}Ryan will make the case for Congress to assert more control over the spending and other aspects of the executive branch during the latest step in the GOP’s policy rollout.

Republicans will call for a “concentration of power” that gives them more authority over the White House. This will include more control over government spending and limits to regulations.

“Congress has routinely ceded control over spending to the executive branch,” Republicans say.

The GOP plan will include a renewed effort to release timely appropriations bills that provide the federal government with clear spending limits.

Republicans may also conduct an inventory of non-appropriated government spending and seek to punish bureaucrats that spend beyond their means.

“Just as the size of government has grown, so has its arrogance. Washington spends money it isn’t authorized to spend. It takes power it isn’t given. It ignores laws it is required to execute,” Republicans say. “It doesn’t listen.”
