New regs for Wednesday: Spiders, buses, fruit and vegetable juices

Wednesday’s edition of the Federal Register contains new rules for fruit and vegetable juices, protections for spiders and accessible guidelines for buses.

Here’s what is happening:

Spiders: The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is proposing new protections for spiders.

The FWS proposed Tuesday to list tarantula spiders as an endangered species. The protections would apply to five species of tarantulas, including the Poecilotheria fasciata, P. ornata, P. smithi, P. subfusca and P. vittata.

The public has 60 days to comment.

Bus: The Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board is moving forward with new guidelines to make buses more accessible to people with disabilities.

The accessibility guidelines go into effect in 30 days.

Pot: The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will begin tracking “marihuana extract.”

The DEA already tracks marijuana as a Schedule I controlled substance, but will now separate its enforcement against marijuana “extract,” which was previously tracked under the broader umbrella.

The changes go into effect in 30 days.

Juice: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is drafting new guidelines for juice color additives.

The guidelines will apply to fruit juice and vegetable juice and “help manufacturers determine whether a color additive derived from a plant material meets the specifications under certain FDA color additive regulations,” the FDA said.

The public has 60 days to comment.
