Women’s march to include gun violence protesters

Gun control advocates will protest policies supported by President-elect Donald Trump during the Women’s March on Washington on Saturday.

Gun violence will be included in the protesters’ focus on women’s rights, safety and health because it “disproportionately affects women,” according to a statement from former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s group, Everytown for Gun Safety.

Everytown claims the “vast majority of mass shooting victims are women,” saying they  are 16 times more likely to be shot to death in America compared to other developed countries.

“The NRA leadership’s agenda is a threat to women everywhere,” an Everytown spokesperson told The Hill. “Their leadership has a history of misogyny and the policies they back make it easy for domestic abusers to get their hands on guns.”

{mosads}The gun control protests will not specifically target Trump, but he has been endorsed by the NRA and supports for many of the same policies that they are protesting.

Everytown’s Julianne Moore and Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, will participate in the Women’s March on Washington, to be held one day after Trump’s inauguration.

“We are marching to send a message to our nation’s leaders – in Congress, in statehouses and in corporate boardrooms across the country – that women will not stand on the sidelines while our safety and the safety of our families and communities is jeopardized by the gun lobby’s dangerous agenda to allow guns for anyone, anywhere, any time – no questions asked,” Watts said in a statement.

Gun control advocates will also participate in more than 20 related women’s marches around the country on Saturday.
