New regs for Monday: Baby products, efficiency, education
Monday’s edition of the Federal Register contains new safety standards for baby products, but delays to Obama-era efficiency and education rules.
Here’s what is happening:
Efficiency: The Department of Energy is delaying Obama-era efficiency standards.
The Energy Department’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is delaying the implementation of new test procedures for walk-in coolers and freezers issued in December.
{mosads}This stems from President Trump’s regulatory moratorium.
The test procedures will now go into effect March 21.
Baby: The Consumer Product Safety Commission is moving forward with new safety standards for baby products, which were exempted from Trump’s regulatory moratorium.
The safety standard for infant slings that new mothers use to carry their young children address reports of more than 150 accidents since 2003. This includes 17 deaths and 90 injuries.
The safety standards will apply to 47 companies that sell “hand-held infant carriers, soft infant carriers, frame backpack carriers, and sling carriers” in the U.S.
The rules go into effect Jan. 30, 2018.
Schools: The Department of Education is delaying Obama-era education rules.
To comply with Trump’s regulatory moratorium, the Education Department will delay implementation of new accountability rules and state plans under the Every Student Succeeds Act that were published on Nov. 29.
The Education Department is also delaying new licensing requirements published on Jan. 19, the day before Trump took office.
These rules will now go into effect March 21.
