Giffords: Toddlers with guns more dangerous than refugees
Gun-control activists are mocking President Trump’s executive order on immigration, saying gun accidents are a far greater threat to Americans than refugees.
“Let’s put it in perspective,” wrote former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.) in an email seeking donations for her gun-control group, Americans for Responsible Solutions.
“There is a group that has proven itself to be far more deadly on American soil,” Giffords said. “A group that has killed someone once a week for the last two years: Toddlers.”
“That’s why we’re fighting to ensure guns are kept safe from kids,” she added.
During the 2016 campaign, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, another gun-control group, released a satirical ad that highlighted the issue of toddlers getting their hands on guns and accidentally shooting people.
Trump issued an executive order limiting immigration on Friday and has expressed strong support for gun rights.
The immigration order from Trump bars immigrants from seven predominately Muslim countries for 90 days, halts all refugee resettlement in the United States for four months and bans Syrian refugee resettlement indefinitely.
Giffords’s email said toddlers are more dangerous than many of the immigrants Trump is targeting.
“Rarely has such an assault been so disconnected from the threats we truly face,” she said of Trump’s immigration order. “The truth is this: In the history of accepting refugees in this country, none has committed a terrorist attack on our soil.”
Giffords became a gun-control activist after surviving a mass shooting in 2011. In her fundraising email, she warns the “gun lobby” is seeking to weaken firearms restrictions after helping Trump win the White House.
