New regs for Thursday: Endangered, education, foreign ownership

Thursday’s edition of the Federal Register contains new rules for endangered species and education.

Here’s what is happening:

Endangered: The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is reviewing the protections for endangered and threatened species along the Pacific Coast.

The FWS announced Wednesday it will conduct a status review of 138 various animal and plant species, such as butterflies and snails, found in California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii.

Most of these species are considered endangered, but at least two are listed as threatened. The review could lead to fewer protections for some of these species, if the agency determines they have recovered.

The public has 60 days to comment.

Education: The Department of Education is increasing the penalties for organizations that violate its regulations to match inflation.

The new penalties go into effect immediately.

Ownership: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will review foreign ownership rules.

The FCC announced Wednesday its information collection request was approved by the White House. This will allow the agency to review the implementation of its foreign ownership rules.
