ATF preps new gun storage regs

The Obama administration is preparing to issue new restrictions on firearm storage in places where guns are sold.

The White House this week completed its review of proposed regulations drafted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to records kept by the Office of Management and Budget.

{mosads}The draft rule involves requirements that would-be gun dealers certify the use of secure gun storage and safety devices wherever firearms are sold to non-licensed individuals.

The bureau is also looking to amend its definition for “antique” firearms, which are subject to different regulations. Under the draft regulations, certain muzzle loading firearms could be considered antiques.

The ATF did not immediately respond to questions about when the agency plans to propose the rule.

With major gun control initiatives stalled in Congress, the Obama administration has sought to pursue more stringent regulations through executive action. The White House has claimed progress on nearly two-dozen measures identified in the aftermath of the 2012 shooting-spree at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

However the gun control movement’s top priorities – universal background checks for firearm sales and an assault weapons ban – require congressional action.
