Costco store recalls chicken linked to salmonella outbreak

{mosads}The company is calling back more than 8,700 Kirkland Signature Foster Farms rotisserie chickens and 300 chicken soup, chicken salad and chicken leg products.

“Costco has already taken steps to contact every customer who purchased rotisserie chicken products,” the USDA said in a statement.

The products were sold between Sept. 11 and Sept. 23 of this year.

Last week, the USDA warned the public that a case of salmonella linked to three Foster Farms chicken plants in California had led to more than 300 illnesses in 20 states across the country.

Some of the seven detected salmonella strains have been resistant to drugs, making them especially hard to treat. About 40 percent of the people sickened by the bacteria have been hospitalized, which is twice the normal rate.

On Friday the agency reached an agreement with Foster Farms that allowed the plants at the center of the outbreak to remain open, a decision some lawmakers and food safety advocates called “outrageous.”
