Court jumps into Ala. redistricting fight

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Monday to hear a pair of challenges to Alabama’s legislative map from groups who accuse the state’s GOP-dominated legislature of racial gerrymandering.

{mosads}The two cases — Alabama Democratic Conference v. Alabama and Alabama Legislative Black Caucus v. Alabama — will be consolidated into a single challenge to political lines drawn in 2012, according to an order issued by the justices.

The plaintiffs contend the map was purposefully crafted to limit the influence of black voters, though a lower federal court disagreed.

The Supreme Court has allotted an hour for arguments on a yet unspecified date.
