Documents suggest plea deal may have been reached in case against alleged Russian agent

Federal prosecutors and defense attorneys may have reached a plea deal in the criminal case against gun rights activist and alleged Russian agent Maria Butina.

In a joint filing Monday, the parties asked the federal district court judge overseeing the case to set a plea hearing at the court’s earliest convenience.

{mosads}“The parties have resolved this matter, and the Defendant Maria Butina remains in custody,” they wrote.

Judge Tanya Chutkan on Monday afternoon granted the attorneys’ request and scheduled the plea agreement for Wednesday at 3: 15 p.m.

The request comes less than a month after Butina’s attorneys and prosecutors said in a court filing they were negotiating a potential resolution to her criminal case. 

Butina was indicted in July on charges of acting as an agent of the Russian Federation to infiltrate organizations active in American politics, including the National Rifle Association, and to exploit personal connections with Americans in an effort to advance Russian interests.
