Powell, Chesebro apology letters in Georgia election interference case one sentence long

Former Trump attorneys Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro were required to write apology letters as part of plea deals in the Georgia election interference case, but the letters were just a sentence long.

The letters, first acquired by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday, fail to acknowledge President Biden’s 2020 election victory or denounce conspiracy theories about the election that both attorneys helped spread.

“I apologize for my actions in connection with the events in Coffee County,” lawyer Sidney Powell wrote in her letter dated Oct. 19.

“I apologize to the citizens of the State of Georgia and of Fulton County for my involvement in Count 15 of the indictment,” attorney Kenneth Chesebro wrote a day later.

Powell and Chesebro both pleaded guilty to charges related to their conduct in Georgia in the wake of the 2020 election. They were charged alongside 17 others, including former President Trump, accused of attempting to overturn election results.

Two other defendants have also reached plea deals with prosecutors, while the rest have pleaded not guilty. The other two defendants’ apology letters were longer and showed remorse.

Fellow former Trump attorney Jenna Ellis read her lengthy letter in court in October, tearfully saying she had “deep remorse” for her actions.

“Although I certainly did not mean to violate any laws, I now realize that I did and have accepted responsibility for my actions,” co-defendant and bail bondsman Scott Hall wrote in his apology letter.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis urged the case’s judge to move forward with the case quickly this week, and implied that more plea deals are likely before a trial.

Judge Scott McAfee has shed doubt on Willis’s plan to try all remaining 15 defendants together.

“My answer would be it’s whittled down now to a size we can try, but I don’t know that all 15 will be at the table once they get through the process,” she said.
