Court orders release of sealed documents in mysterious Mueller grand jury case

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday ordered the release of certain sealed documents in a mysterious legal battle between a foreign company and special counsel Robert Mueller.

The three-judge panel ordered that the federal government file redacted versions of court filings in the case by June 21. The court also ordered that the government submit proposed redactions to the transcript of one proceeding in the case by July 12.

Still, the documents could reveal new details about the secretive legal battle.

Mueller’s grand jury had been seeking information from the foreign company, but the company had refused to comply with the subpoena.

The company has argued that it is immune from the subpoena under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, and that the request would force the corporation to violate domestic law.

However, several courts ruled against the company, known only as “Corporation A” in court filings. The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals had already upheld a contempt order against the corporation, and the Supreme Court refused to block the order earlier this year.

The Supreme Court in March also rejected the company’s request that the justices consider its appeal over the grand jury subpoena.

Mueller concluded his Russia probe earlier this year and formally stepped down as special counsel late last month.

But his grand jury has shown recent signs of activity, including hearing testimony last week from Roger Stone associate Andrew Miller, who had resisted appearing before the grand jury for a year.
