Father, 14-year-old son indicted on murder charges over Georgia High School shooting

Father and his 14-year-old son were indicted by a grand jury Thursday on murder charges over the September Georgia high school shooting where four people were killed.

The Georgia grand jury indicted Colt Gray, 14, on 55 counts, including murder in the killing of two students and two teachers at the Apalachee High School Winder, Ga., and 25 counts of aggravated assault, according to The Associated Press (AP). His father, Colin Gray, is facing 29 counts, including two charges of involuntary manslaughter and two of second-degree murder.

They are slated to have their arraignment on Nov. 21, according to AP. Colt Gray is at a juvenile detention center while his father, Colin Gray, is at Barrow County prison.

Apart from the 4 people killed in the shooting, nine people were injured. Colt Gray was accused of carrying out the deadliest school shooting in the Peach State’s history. His father, Colin Gray, was accused of allowing his son to access the AR-15-style weapon.

“Every person, every kid in that school was a victim,” District Attorney Brad Smith told reporters on Thursday, per AP. “Kids in all the other schools that were locked down during this were victims. Parents that were terrified about where their kids were.”

The FBI revealed days after the shooting that Colt Gray was interviewed last year after the bureau received tips about previous alleged threats he made online. The agency said there was no probable cause for an arrest.

Thursday’s indictment of Colin Gray was another example of law enforcement attempting to hold parents of school shooters responsible. Parents of Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley — Jennifer and James Crumbley — were the first parents to be charged and sentenced for being criminally responsible for the Oxford High School shooting where four students were killed.
