Gun control activists train sights on states

Proponents of tougher gun regulations are shifting their focus from the federal government to a handful of states, The Washington Post reports.

“Gun-control activists have largely given up on Congress, which did not pass background-check legislation after the school massacre in Newtown, Conn., last December that killed 20 children and six adults,” the Post’s Philip Rucker writes.

{mosads}“The groups are shifting their resources to a handful of states such as Colorado, where they have hired political operatives to try to build permanent gun-control movements.”

Indeed, congressional Democrats who thought Newtown would lead to stricter federal laws conceded to The Hill that the post-Newtown push is dead in Congress, at least for now.

But advocates claim momentum in state legislatures around the country, which passed a host of strengthened gun laws in 2013, according to RegWatch.
