Giffords group targets ‘guns everywhere’ bill

The gun control group founded by former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is launching a campaign to defeat what it calls “the most extreme gun bill in America.”

Georgia’s HB 875, which would allow licensed gun owners to bring their firearms into bars, airports, government buildings and churches, has been dubbed by activists the “guns everywhere” bill.

{mosads}The measure overwhelmingly passed the Republican-controlled state House on Tuesday, sending the controversial measure to the state Senate.

In response to the action, Americans for Responsible Solutions (ARS) released an online ad and is initiating an email and phone drive to pressure Gov. Nathan Deal (R) and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle (R) to oppose the measure, the group said.

“Georgia lawmakers are now considering passing the most extreme gun bill in America,” said Pia Carusone, the group’s executive director. “It would allow people to carry guns everywhere — in schools, airports, and even bars — and reverses a 100-year rule preventing guns in churches.”

Giffords, an Arizona Democrat who was shot and nearly killed in 2011, later founded ARS with her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly.
