Heritage Action wants lawmakers to back anti-federal teacher evaluation provision

{mosads}The amendment is being offered by Reps. Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Rob Bishop (R-Utah) and seeks to address fears that the bill, called the Student Success Act, would impose a federal mandate on teacher evaluations as it is currently written.

Heritage Action had previously termed the legislation’s evaluation language a “serious policy limitation,” since it gives power to the federal government instead of local school districts, the group said.

“The federal government should not be dictating such state or schoolteacher evaluation policies or involving itself in local school districts’ personnel decisions,” the organization said in its alert.

The group will make note of whether lawmakers support the amendment in its legislative scorecard, it said.

The House is voting on amendments to the Student Success Act on Thursday, and the full bill is expected to receive a vote on Friday.

President Obama threatened to veto the bill on Wednesday, if it ever reached his desk.
