The week ahead in regulation

{mosads}With the House and Senate in session and Obama administration action expected on numerous fronts, the coming week looks to be busy one for regulatory issues. Here’s what’s on the horizon:

Monday:

On Monday morning, the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) are scheduled to convene a meeting on proposed regulations for how employers will be required to report information under the Affordable Care Act.

Later, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will hear from several top Obama administration criminal enforcement officials on efforts underway to counter threats posed by bitcoin and other emerging virtual currency.

Tuesday:

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a 9 a.m. meeting to weigh changes to emergency response regulations in response to the 2011 meltdown at Japan’s Fukushima power plant.

Across town, Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence Chairwoman Sarah Brady will host a news conference on the state of gun control regulations 20 years after passage of the landmark Brady Bill.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Health subcommittee will examine federal regulation of mobile medical apps.

Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa), along with the Center for Plain Language, will unveil a report ranking federal agencies on their performance issuing regulations in layman’s terms.

In the afternoon, members of the Senate Banking Committee will take a turn examining the implications of virtual currency.

And in the evening, outgoing Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke is scheduled to deliver remarks to the National Economists Club.

Wednesday:

At 10 a.m., the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s National Security subcommittee is slated to probe the Department of Homeland Security’s overtime and pension policies.

Thursday:

The House Small Business Committee will hear testimony from the Obama administration and businesses about the impact of new trucking regulations imposed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

The Senate Banking Committee will convene a hearing titled, “Housing Finance Reform: Powers and Structure of a Strong Regulator.” Witnesses will include officials from the Federal Housing Finance Agency and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

The Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works will check in on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s progress in enacting a host of new post-Fukushima rules.
