Schakowsky pushes delayed car rearview camera rule
{mosads}“I would love to meet with you about the regulation that would require rear visibility cameras, which has been held up at the National Highway Transportation Safety [Administration], that would prevent two children, on average, a week from being killed by backovers,” she said. “If we could, at some point, meet on that, I’d appreciate it.”
The rule was called for by a 2008 law and was supposed to be finalized by February 2011.
But more than two years after that date, a final rule has yet to come out. In June, the agency hit the breaks again on the rule, announcing that it needed to do further analysis. It intends to finish the study by the end of 2014.
Safety advocates have heavily criticized the administration for the delay, especially since more and more car companies are installing the cameras on their own accord.
A 2010 analysis found that the regulation could cost automakers as much as $2.7 billion each year.
