New regs for Thursday: Regulations are back

The Drug Enforcement Administration wants to add three synthetic drugs to its list of the most dangerous substances. 

The three stimulants, known as phenethylamines, should be labeled as Schedule 1 drugs, the agency said in a notice, which would bring harsh penalties for possession and distribution of the substances.

According to the agency, the action is “necessary to avoid an imminent hazard to the public safety.”

“No approved medical use has been identified for these synthetic phenethylamines, nor have they been approved by the FDA for human consumption,” the agency said. However, the drugs have been sold online for recreational use since 2010, and are sometimes alleged to be the hallucinogenic drug LSD.

Fishing:

National commercial fishing regulators are prohibiting fishing for pollock in one region of the Gulf of Alaska and closing a zone for catching king mackerel off the coast of Florida.

Another rule halting direct fishing for pollock in another area of the Gulf of Alaska will formally be published on Friday, but has already been announced. 

According to the National Marine Fisheries Service, the actions are necessary to prevent overfishing.

Though many regulators have been furloughed across the government, staffers at the fishing agency are allowed to stay on the job to prevent overfishing.
