Amazon grounds hoverboards

As the holiday shopping season heats up, Amazon is removing some popular hoverboards from its website over safety concerns.

This follows a federal government investigation into potential dangers caused by hoverboards.

{mosads}The Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) announced over the weekend it has received 10 reports of hoverboards catching fire, while at least 29 people have gone to the hospital for injuries sustained after falling off of one of these motorized boards.

Some of the injuries people sustained after falling off a hoverboard include fractures, sprains, contusions, abrasions and lacerations. That was enough for the CPSC to open an investigation into what is being labeled one of the hottest holiday gifts around the the country.

“We know how popular the product is,” CPSC spokeswoman Patty Davis said. “We know consumers are giving the product as a gift during the holidays and we are working all across the country to move our investigation forward as quickly as possible.”

Amazon is now responding to the concerns by removing some hoverboards from its website, including one made by leading hoverboard manufacturer Swagway, according to a report by The Verge. Other hoverboards were still available to for sale on Monday morning. 

The top three U.S. airlines have also prohibited hoverboards from flights over fears they could cause fires on planes.
