Watch live: White House press briefing

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addresses reporters during the daily briefing at the White House on Monday, August 14, 2023.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is slated to hold a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon. The White House says that President Biden remains in “constant contact” with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) as the state deals with the impact of Hurricane Idalia — which made landfall Wednesday morning.

The National Hurricane Center says the storm is expected to weaken, but it still is likely to bring ‘catastrophic’ storm surges as it heads across the Florida Gulf Coast and southern Georgia later Wednesday.

Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina have all issued states of emergency, allowing officials to provide aid more effectively.

The briefing is scheduled for 12:45 p.m. EDT.
