The House is convening Tuesday and could vote to elect a Speaker, following the selection of House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) from among seven contenders that remained by mid-morning in a closed-door meeting of the GOP caucus.
Emmer only required a majority to become the Republican Speaker-designee. But on the floor, if Democrats back their own leader, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Emmer will need to win 217 Republican votes.
In the previous two floor votes, neither House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) nor Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) managed to gather enough votes from their own party.
