Democratic senators hold presser on bill protecting IVF following Alabama ruling: Watch live

Recorded earlier

Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.) are holding a news conference about legislation that would safeguard access to in vitro fertilization (IVF).

The Access to Family Building Act, introduced in January, would add additional protections for those who choose to undergo IVF or donate genetic material, or for health care professionals who administer the procedure.

Tuesday’s conference comes in the wake of the recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling that established personhood for frozen human embryos.

The state court’s decision came from consideration of a civil case concerning the mishandling of stored embryos, but it led the University of Alabama at Birmingham and other medical providers to pause IVF treatments altogether, given the uncertain burden of liability they now face.

Reproductive rights advocates see the Alabama ruling, and other abortion restrictions, as part of a pattern of the encroachment of government control over medical decisions, particularly regarding women’s health.

The event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EST.
