Watch: Trump, Vance woo voters in North Carolina as campaign shifts to target Harris
Former President Trump and Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), who Trump tapped as his running mate earlier this month, will make a campaign stop in Charlotte, North Carolina, Wednesday, as the campaign looks to pivot its strategy after President Biden announced he would not be seeking reelection.
The event comes as Vice President Harris has risen as the former president’s likely challenger in November. Harris, who received Biden’s endorsement after he announced his departure from the race, has boasted record fundraising numbers since stepping into the spotlight.
The event marks only the second rally where Trump and Vance have appeared as a team, just a week after the failed assassination attempt against the former president. The Ohio Republican, a Trump critic turned loyalist, joined the former president in Michigan over the weekend, where he spent a good portion levying attacks on Harris.
Trump was leading Biden in the Tar Heel State with 48.2 percent support to the president’s 43.2 percent, per The Hill/Decision Desk HQ’s polling index. In 2020, the former president ultimately won the state by less than 1 percentage point.
The event in North Carolina, a key swing state in 2024, is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. EDT.
