Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) hosted a ceremony Tuesday to present the Congressional Gold Medal, its highest honor, to the 13 U.S. service members who were killed during the U.S. military’s withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
The incident has become politically charged, with Republicans assigning blame for the chaotic exit from the decades-long Afghan conflict squarely upon President Biden. The Biden administration has maintained that it was following through on plans laid out by former President Trump.
