Virginia incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine (D) debated Republican challenger Hung Cao Wednesday in a live event hosted by WAVY from Norfolk State University’s campus.
Kaine was elected to the Senate in 2013, after serving as the governor of Virginia from 2006 to 2010. He was also former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s running mate in the 2016 presidential election.
Cao, a 25-year Navy veteran, won the GOP primary in June and has been backed by former President Trump.
The Hill/Decision Desk HQ’s polling index shows Kaine with a sizable lead over his Republican opponent — garnering 88 percent to Cao’s 12 percent support. Virginia has not elected a Republican to the upper chamber of Congress since 2002.
WAVY is owned by Nexstar Media Group, which also owns The Hill.
The debate was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. EDT.
