WATCH: California Dem lawmaker disagrees with Steinle verdict
A Democratic lawmaker from California says he does not agree with a San Francisco jury’s verdict acquitting a Mexican immigrant of murder charges in the 2015 killing of Kate Steinle.
“I respect our jury system … I don’t agree with this verdict. I wish it would have come out otherwise and so I pray for their family,” Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), a former prosecutor, said in an interview with The Hill.
Swalwell said he knew Kate Steinle and is close with her family, saying he played soccer with her brother.
Steinle’s parents live in Pleasanton — a city in Swalwell’s East Bay-based district.
