WATCH: Byrne open to Alabama Senate run
Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Ala.) is open to taking on Sen.-elect Doug Jones (D-Ala.) in 2020.
“Sure, I think a lot of us are going to be looking at it. Somebody is going to be the Republican nominee in 2020 in Alabama and will defeat Doug Jones,” Byrne said in an interview.
“I’m going to wait until after I go through my election next year and make a decision,” Byrne said.
{mosads}Jones won a special election this week, a dramatic upset over GOP candidate Roy Moore in a heavily Republican state.
Jones replaces Jeff Sessions, who vacated the seat to become President Trump’s attorney general.
The Democrat will likely be an underdog in 2020, when he will first face reelection.
“In a regular election without these extraordinary circumstances we had this past week, Republicans are going to win election in Alabama and it’s not even going to be close,” Byrne predicted, “so it’s a question of who that Republican is going to be.”
According to reports, fellow GOP Alabama Rep. Gary Palmer is also eyeing a run for the Senate seat in 2020.
