GOP lawmaker: Obama doesn’t get it
A GOP lawmaker suggested that President Obama is out of touch on foreign policy following his speech to cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., on Wednesday.
Foreign Affairs Committee Chairwoman Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) disagreed with Obama’s contention that diplomacy and multilateralism demonstrate U.S. power around the globe.
“We are respected around the world because of our military might … it doesn’t meant that we have to use it,” Ros-Lehtinen said in an interview with The Hill.
The former Foreign Affairs Committee chairwoman called the speech “wonderful, if we did not have enemies all around us who want to kill us.”
Given dramatically different international geopolitical dynamics, the president’s sentiments would have been on the mark.
“I think that is the right speech but at the wrong time,” she added.
