Watch live: White House holds news briefing as government shutdown looms

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will answer reporters’ questions on Thursday afternoon before President Trump is set to meet with congressional leaders to negotiate a long-term spending bill.

Facing a midnight Friday deadline, Congress is racing to pass a two-week extension in an effort to buy more time to negotiate a larger deal to fund the government through next September.
