Conservative group says McConnell ‘let us down’ on ObamaCare

The Senate Conservatives Fund’s super-PAC is accusing Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) of helping Democrats fund ObamaCare with a new television ad.

{mosads}The ad charges that “when Kentucky needed Mitch McConnell the most, he let us down.” It characterizes McConnell’s role in brokering a deal to end the shutdown as helping to fund ObamaCare.

“Conservatives asked Mitch McConnell to lead the fight against ObamaCare. He didn’t listen,” a narrator opens the ad.

“Instead, McConnell helped Barack Obama and Harry Reid fund ObamaCare. Now Kentucky families are paying the price,” the narrator adds.

Senate Conservatives Action (SCA) is spending $330,000 to air the 30-second spot on broadcast and cable television from Oct. 30 to Nov. 12. 

It’s the latest attack on the Senate Minority Leader from the group, which was founded by former South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint (R). The group endorsed McConnell’s primary opponent, Matt Bevin, earlier this month.

In September, the SCF launched another ad focused on McConnell, calling for him to “lead on defunding ObamaCare,” when conservatives were toying with the possibility of shutting down the government to defund the law. 

McConnell never signed onto the strategy, drawing the ire of conservative groups and has since pledged that there would be no more shutdowns during future negotiations over the budget.

Still, his opposition to the defunding strategy has opened him up to attacks from the right.

“Mitch McConnell says he opposes Obamacare when he’s in Kentucky but then he helps the Democrats fund Obamacare when he’s in Washington,” said SCA Executive Director Matt Hoskins in a release. “Mitch McConnell has lost his way. It’s why more and more Kentucky Republicans are supporting Matt Bevin, a true conservative who will fight for their values.”

But McConnell’s campaign dismissed the ad, accusing the group of “working day and night to ensure Barack Obama’s majority in the Senate.”

“When Mitch McConnell was rallying conservatives to fight ObamaCare, the fundraising group responsible for these ads was working day and night to ensure Barack Obama’s majority in the Senate,” said McConnell spokeswoman Allison Moore. ‘You get an idea of what team the Senate Conservatives Fund is on when you realize that there are scores of Democrats who actually voted for ObamaCare up for reelection and this group, purporting to support conservative causes, is investing their well-intentioned donors’ money into attacking the man responsible for leading the opposition to the law.”
