Cummings: Move to ‘higher ground’

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) rejects Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) calls to move to “common ground,” and said Monday the U.S. must instead move to “higher ground.”

Cummings voted for the bipartisan budget deal Thursday that Ryan reached with Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.).

“I wasn’t particularly happy,” Cummings said about the budget deal on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Monday. “I would have loved to have seen us address the issue of unemployment insurance.”

{mosads}Democrats had originally pushed for unemployment benefits to be included in the deal but ultimately conceded. The White House and Democratic leaders on the Hill have said they’ll try to find another vehicle for them.

The U.S. is doing what the military says should never be done, Cummings said.

“We should never leave anybody behind, and I think that’s exactly what’s happening right now.
