Prince William: I forgot to ask gender of first child
Prince William tells President Obama that in the “excitement” of his first child’s birth, he actually “forgot” to ask whether his wife, Kate Middleton, had a boy or girl.
“I remember when George was born, I forgot to actually work out whether it was a boy or girl. The excitement of the event and everything else was just chaos,” the duke of Cambridge is heard telling the commander in chief in video posted on ITV. Prince William met with Obama at the White House on Monday during his first trip to the nation’s capital.
The royal heir welcomed son George last year. Middleton is pregnant with the couple’s second child, due in the spring. After Prince William admitted he “forgot” to inquire whether little George was actually more of a “Georgette,” Obama smiled and asked, “You forgot to ask?”
{mosads}“Actually, it was a boy at the end,” Prince William, 32, said with a grin. “So that was good.”
The White House pit stop was the start of a whirlwind few hours in Washington for the son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Middleton stayed in New York, while her husband made the trek to the District. He’s poised to return to the Big Apple later on Monday.
Fans of the royal family could be seen braving chilly temperatures outside the World Bank in downtown D.C. Monday afternoon, trying to catch a glimpse of the second in line to the British throne, as he arrived to take part in a meeting and working lunch on combating corruption.
Joined by World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, Prince William said in remarks to a packed audience, “Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your extremely warm welcome, on this, my first visit to Washington.”
“At its heart, all corruption is an abuse of power, the pursuit of money, or influence at the expense of society as a whole,” he said. “Worst of all, it weighs most heavily on the world’s poorest and most powerless people.” Speaking at a steady pace, the prince said “time is not on our side,” when it comes to wildlife conservation.
“Today I make a plea for your support,” the British royal said. “I’m determined not to let the world’s children grow up on a planet, where our most iconic and endangered species have been wiped out, impoverishing us all. I hope you’ll join me.” Prince William’s arrival at the World Bank was delayed by more than 30 minutes after his White House visit. As he entered a luncheon following his speech at the World Bank, he could be heard apologizing for his less-than-punctual appearance, saying repeatedly, “I’m sorry to keep you waiting.”
