Lawmakers praise Caitlyn Jenner’s ESPY awards speech on Twitter

Caitlyn Jenner is being lauded by some lawmakers for her acceptance speech at Wednesday night’s ESPY awards.

The Olympic gold medalist took to the stage to accept the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at ESPN’s annual ceremony.

Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, announced in April she was in the process of becoming a woman. Democratic California Reps. Mike Honda and Mark Takano were quick to praise Jenner on Twitter:

“Trans people deserve something vital,” Jenner, 65, said to applause. “They deserve your respect. And from that respect comes a more compassionate community, a more empathetic society and a better world for all of us.”
