Vulnerable House Republicans are in some cases refusing to endorse Donald Trump as the party’s presidential pick.
Given Trump’s controversial statements on the massacre in Orlando and Mexican heritage of a judge presiding over lawsuits against Trump University, Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) says a number of his colleagues “are nervous … when the top of the ticket goes off the reservation like that, and I think that that’s a legitimate concern.”
Colorado’s Mike Coffman (R) tells The Hill that some of his colleagues “haven’t made that commitment” to Trump but should “be OK” if they stick to their principles ahead of the November elections.
Trump surrogate Rep. Tom Marino (R-Pa.) believes this year’s will be an “anti-establishment” election and that Trump won’t be hurt by lawmakers keeping their distance.
Meanwhile, two GOP lawmakers — Will Hurd (Texas) and Carlos Curbelo (Fla.) — tell The Hill that they haven’t endorsed anyone yet.
