WATCH: GOP Reps. cheer Trump outreach to Ryan, conservatives
Conservative Republican lawmakers in D.C. for the first time since last week’s elections cheer President-elect Donald Trump’s outreach to Congress and his decision to appoint Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Preibus and Breitbart News executive Steve Bannon as top White House staff.
“Speaker Ryan told us at the conference even this morning that he’s having lengthy conversations with Mr. Trump every day,” Rep. John Duncan (R-Tenn.) said in an interview with The Hill’s Molly K. Hooper.
Fellow Republican Reps. John Carter (Texas) and Steve King (Iowa) applauded Bannon’s appointment as chief strategist.
“We have a solid conservative constitutionalist, patriotic anchor that will be sitting in the White House using all of his brain to strategize taking this country in the right direction,” King said in an interview.
But Democratic Rep. Dan Kildee (Mich) said Trump’s appointment of Bannon is “not a step in the right direction” of working with Democrats in Congress.
