President-elect Donald Trump won’t be able to strike individual deals with every company to keep jobs in the U.S., a House Democrat is warning.
Trump “can’t go to every single company that wants to move out — he just can’t do that as the president. … It’s got to be the policies,” Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) told The Hill.
{mosads}Lawmakers from both sides applauded Carrier’s decision to keep 1,000 jobs in the U.S. after striking a deal with Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence this week.
Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) said he was “a little bit skeptical of the claims that [Trump], by virtue of his authority, got those jobs to stay.”
But House Republicans said it was a signal of job creation to come.
Citing Trump’s “persuasive” deal-making abilities, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) told The Hill, “Whether it’s in North Carolina or in between, he’s sincere about creating good jobs and keeping them here in the U.S.”
Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) called the decision the “first fruit of a Trump presidency.”
