Few in DC will love Iran deal, expert says

Lawmakers are unlikely to embrace the emerging diplomatic deal with Iran, a nuclear nonproliferation expert tells The Hill.

“If an agreement is signed, this will be an agreement I think few people will love here in Washington,” said Robert Litwak, the Director of International Security Studies at the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars in Washington.

{mosads}Litwak says in an interview with The Hill’s Molly K. Hooper that a full rollback of Iran’s nuclear program was already “not possible” by the time President Obama took office because the country “already had nine centrifuges.”

“So the negotiations have focused on limiting the program, not ending the program, and extending the breakout period that Iran would need to go from a latent capability to a weapon if it chose to make that strategic decision,” Litwak said.
