WATCH: GOP rep predicts Trump will sign bill defunding Planned Parenthood
A key GOP lawmaker predicts that Donald Trump would sign legislation defunding Planned Parenthood.
“I anticipate that Mr. Trump will sign that,” Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) said in an interview with The Hill’s Molly K. Hooper.
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has said that the GOP’s push to repeal ObamaCare will include defunding the organization.
{mosads}Blackburn said such legislation “would actually be codifying the Hyde Amendment language.”
The Hyde Amendment, named after former Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Ill.), is frequently tacked on to the annual Health and Human Services funding bill and prevents federal funding from being used to cover the cost of abortions.
Asked if Planned Parenthood will receive money for its other women’s services, Blackburn, the former chairwoman of the Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives, said, “Yes, Title X funds for women’s healthcare services, absolutely.”
But Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier (Calif.), who served on the Select Investigative Panel, told The Hill that Republicans want to go beyond codifying the Hyde Amendment.
“What (Blackburn is) basically saying is that any provider who also provides abortion services would not be able to access this money for other healthcare services even though there’s a firewall, which has been the case for Planned Parenthood forever,” Speier said.
