Female lawmakers noticed enhanced security at their Thursday morning softball practice ahead of next week’s Congressional Women’s Softball Game, according to a participant.
“Already today they had Capitol Police who were very visible around the perimeter and certainly focused on our safety.” Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M.) told The Hill’s Molly K. Hooper when asked if the ladies would request additional security in light of Wednesday’s shooting.
Lujan Grisham is one of 14 lawmakers set to play in next Wednesday’s game against a roster of female reporters. The event raises money for young women with breast cancer.
Lujan Grisham said “it was really nice to see” the “extra police” at practice just one day after her colleague, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), and four others were injured in a shooting during a similar early morning baseball practice in Alexandria, Va.
The New Mexico lawmaker also said Thursday that the women’s practice was “really good” and that the team felt “a positive spirit will send healing wishes to Scalise and his family and the officers that are still healing and to the young staffers.”
